NetHack 3.1 for the Macintosh 1/93
Owner's Manual and Installation Guide
=== License
The following is an excerpt from the NetHack license which is
explicitly included in this distribution and is also available for
reading from within the game (using the command sequence ?i). By
reading this material or by playing the game, you implicitly agree
to be bound the terms of that license.
----------------
Stated plainly: You are prohibited by the terms of this License Agreement
from using NetHack for gainful purposes. You are permitted to modify
NetHack, or otherwise use parts of NetHack, provided that you comply with
the conditions specified above; in particular, your modified NetHack or
program containing parts of NetHack must remain freely available as provided
in this License Agreement. In other words, go ahead and share NetHack, but
don't try to stop anyone else from sharing it farther.
----------------
=== Installation
To install the game NetHack 3.1, packaged in the archive nh31.hqx,
onto your Macintosh you will need a hard drive with a minimum of 3.5MB
of free space. You will need to decode the BinHex 4.0 encoded archive,
nh31.hqx, to get the self-extracting application nh31.sea. To save
space after that step, you can trash nh31.hqx. Now, you must run
(open or double-click) the application nh31.sea. This will create a
Dungeon folder (in the destination you choose) containing the files
needed to play NetHack 3.1. Again, to save space after that step, you
can trash nh31.sea. The Dungeon folder occupies ~1.7MB of disk space.
NOTE: along with the Dungeon folder the following files will also
be extracted: nh31.doc README.mac NetHack 3.1 license Open Nethack
and Guidebook.
=== The Dungeon Folder and related files
Contained in the Dungeon folder are the files and file types:
NetHack - the application itself.
NetHack Defaults - text file for editing option settings.
Record - scoreboard file.
special levels (*.lev) - 88 files containing intrinsic level data.
utility files - various help and internal configuration files.
These files are either generated during play or after a game:
logfile - listing of all games played. Created after 1st game.
bones files - the remains (data) of deceased players.
saved games (save/n*) - n is a number, * is a player name.
player level files (n*.i) - n is a number (same as saved game),
* is a player name and i is a level number. These files are
generated while a game is in progress.
NetHack Windows - window size/position preference file. This is
found in the Dungeon folder or the System Folder:Preferences Folder
depending on system version. The windows will revert to default
sizes and locations when this file is trashed.
When the logfile gets too large, you can trash it and a new one
will be created. You can also trash old saved games a/o bones files.
You should not trash any of the other files, however you may trash
player level files _not_ belonging to a game in progress.
Please read Macintosh-specific help (command sequence ?j), from
within the game, for more details about these files and other topics.
=== Starting a Game
If you are running system software 6.0.2 or better on any Macintosh
then you can open (double-click) the application NetHack contained in the
Dungeon folder. Alternately, you can open (double-click) the file "Open
Nethack" in the "Nethack 3.1" folder. Enter a suitable character name in
the "Who are you?" dialog and then choose a role for your character in
the subsequent dialog. After the game is underway you should read the
help info made available by using the ? command. Initially, the help sections
related to commands, options and Macintosh-specific help will be of
most interest. By default, the options are configured to get you
started easily, however you should, at some point, reconfigure the
settings to match your preferences.
NetHack has a minimum partition of 1.0MB, however most users will
prefer a partition of around 1.5MB. Each game played to completion
will require around 1.5MB of disk space.
=== Option Editing and Preferences
Eventually, you will want to adjust a few of the many options
available in the game. Option help is accessed from within the game
by either of the command sequences ?f or ?g. You can set default
preferences to be used by every game by editing the text file:
NetHack Defaults. TeachText is a suitable editor application but
you can use any text editor that you like. For your convenience,
you can enter options on one-line or over multiple lines, as in:
OPTIONS=time,!tombstone,female,showexp,showscore
OPTIONS=dogname:Rowf,catname:Meow
OPTIONS=name:Ariel
=== Known Bugs and other Miscellanea
bug: the phase of the moon is not calculated correctly.
bug: [FATAL] candles that burnout may crash!
bug: [FATAL] throwing Magicbane inside a "swallower" may crash!
Compiling NetHack 3.1 for the Macintosh from the initial release
of the source code will yield an application and playground identical
to the one archived in this distribution with the following differences:
1) The distributed game uses the compile-time option "score on bottom
line". This feature is controlled by the option "showscore".
2) The distributed game has reduced memory requirements.
3) Additional commands were added to the Commands and Things menus.
=== Support
Installation questions, comments, suggestions and so on should
be e-mailed to the internet address:
